FLIP FACULTY TWO DAY PROGRAMME Day 1 - The Case That Really Got to Me Day 2 - Deeper Listening

Speakers - Chris Mills &  Gillian Bishop

EVENT SUMMARY
DAY ONE - The Case That Really Got To Me
The workshop is designed to introduce and demonstrate the value of psychologically-based supervision for family lawyers. The structure will aim to reflect the ethos of supervision, meeting the curiosities and particular needs of delegates as they emerge. The style will thus be responsive rather than prescriptive. Following an initial discussion, two main experiential tools will be used to facilitate exploration.

The day will start with an introduction to the history and development of supervision and its theoretical underpinnings, showing how the psychological concepts of splitting and projecting, parallel process and secondary traumatisation relate to stress and burnout symptoms as suffered by professionals working directly with emotional crisis or disturbance.

The morning session will be structured to involve the full group working together as I offer brief (10-15 min) supervision sessions to individual volunteers who are then provided with added support from the rest of the group. The afternoon session will move into examining and experimenting with a 30-minute group supervision model which the delegates will divide into two or three smaller groups to practice.

The day will end with a group reflection on what has been learned and on what delegates may wish to gain further training/experience in, and/or on how they might think of applying their learning directly to their working environment.

DAY TWO - Deeper Listening
This is a one day course aimed at helping family lawyers develop their essential listening skills by starting to deeply listen to themselves and to each other without interruption. The workshop involves some short inputs, personal reflection time and small listening group work. It requires delegates to reflect on their lives and their ability to make decisions. It encourages delegates to connect their experience to their day to day practice.

By listening better to ourselves we become better at deep attentive listening to our clients and help them make the important decisions in a supportive way.

Speakers: Day One- Chris Mills / Day Two - Gillian Bishop

Chris is a psychotherapist, family consultant and supervisor. He believes that knowledge of what contributes to healthy and conscious relating provides the bedrock for excellence and success in the work of family law. The traditional lawyer/client model highlights the professionals’ role as expert, doing something to or for the clients and/or their children. For the field of ADR practice, where the locus of responsibility is more balanced and shared, he is keen to widen this focus to include relationships between the professionals, the central importance of which has been overlooked.

Gillian has been a solicitor for nearly 35 years and a specialist family lawyer for the last 22 years. During that time she has developed passion for learning more about the context of the work she does. For many years she chaired the Skills and Support committee of Resolution with the aim of promoting essential skills training and pushing the boundaries of the average family lawyer’s knowledge.

Who is this training relevant for / Who should attend?

The course is suitable for all Family Law professionals.

Anyone interested in developing a more reflective and connected practice. Anyone who needs time out for themselves. Anyone willing to be adventurous.

Key learning objectives

Key learning points

Day One:
that needing help in dealing with the emotional complexities of work is not weakness or failure;

that a supervision culture greatly contributes to self-awareness, high quality communication and sustained emotional health.
