"CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?" - THE EFFECTS ON CHILDREN
EVENT SUMMARY
This workshop is designed to focus on the needs of children during their parent’s separation and to consider how parents can best manage the concerns they have to ensure a safe transition for their family. The workshop will involve an interactive case study looking at a family crisis from the point of view of three children of different ages, two short videos, presentations and a group discussion focusing on a pragmatic family situation.
Speaker - Suzy Power
Suzy is a mediator, family consultant and dispute resolution specialist. She works alongside a number of family lawyers offering support to their clients on an individual basis as well as to couples in relation to parenting issues.

Overall to provide practitioners with the opportunity to consider the worries children carry during their parent’s separation, the impact on them of continuing conflict and how best to support parents in a balanced and sensitive way.
To focus on helpful language, the use of exploratory questions and pragmatic ideas to help parents keep the children at the centre of their discussions.
To understand the risk factors for children.
To consider how to put the protective factors in place for children’s emotional health.
To encourage practitioners to feel confident about providing constructive and balanced information to parents.

By the end of the course, practitioners will have gained a deeper insight into the needs of children and pragmatic ideas to assist parents. Handouts will be provided focusing on helpful language and questions to use with parents, a reminder of what children say with regard to what they would have liked during their parent’s separation and a paper summarising the research.
