PARENTING COORDINATION TECHNIQUES & ISSUES 

 
Course Summary 
Day 2 of the Parenting Coordination training consider the structure of the Parenting Coordination process. The days addresses the challenges of the role and how to manage some of the issues that you may face as a Parenting Coordinator. 

Who is this course for / Who should attend? 

Please note that if you wish to become a Parenting Coordinator you will ideally need to have been an accredited mediator for at least 3 years. However applications from qualified mediators with less experience may be considered by the course directors where supported by a CV and appropriate references. 
 
To complete the training to become a Parenting Coordinator you will need to attend all 8 days. 

Key learning objectives 

Key learning points 

1. Structuring the Parenting Coordination process: 
The initial session and preparing the parties for the process 
Scheduling the time and location, and establishing the format of each conference and focusing discussions 
Structuring and managing the discussion, maintaining control of the sessions and using appropriate case management skills 
Managing separate sessions, telephone and email communication 
Maintaining appropriate records and documentation as a Parenting Coordinator 
 
2. The Parenting Coordinator’s informed consent, including limits on confidentiality. 
 
3. The Parenting Coordinator’s service contract and fee allocation. 
 
4. The role of the parenting plan in the Parenting Coordination process, including how to develop, monitor and modify a parenting plan. 
 
5. When and how to use outside experts effectively: 
How to assist the parties in deciding on appropriate community resources 
Developing a list of resources, including those for domestic violence situations 
How to work with other professional disciplines involved and promote co-operation among those dealing with the family. 
When and how to use a qualified expert and/or a team approach to best serve the parties in the Parenting Coordination process. 
 
6. Appropriate boundaries of a Parenting Coordinator. 
 
7. Reasons for a Parenting Coordinator to decline an appointment, withdraw or request appropriate assistance including, but not limited to, when the facts or circumstances of the case are beyond the Parenting Coordinator’s skill or experience. 
 
8. Legal requirements and strategies for handling situations when faced with disability issues or special needs.
